Be Fruitful

“Poor is he who works with a negligent and idle hand, But the hand of the diligent makes him rich. He who gathers during summer and takes advantage of his opportunities is a son who acts wisely, but he who sleeps during harvest and ignores the moment of opportunity is a son who acts shamefully.” Proverbs 10:4-5 (AMP)

Did you know that the bible warns against laziness? It is interesting because many would not think that such topic will not be important enough to be addressed in the bible. However, the bible talks about laziness on several occasions. In fact, the bible uses the diligence of an ant as an example of being productive in life.

Give no [unnecessary] sleep to your eyes, nor slumber to your eyelids; Tear yourself away like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter and like a bird from the hand of the fowler. Go to the ant, O lazy one; Observe her ways and be wise, Which, having no chief, Overseer, or ruler, she prepares her food in the summer and brings in her provisions [of food for the winter] in the harvest. How long will you lie down, O lazy one? When will you arise from your sleep [and learn self-discipline]? “Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to lie down and rest”— So your poverty will come like an approaching prowler who walks [slowly, but surely] And your need [will come] like an armed man [making you helpless].

You may wonder “Why would the bible harp on laziness? and how will it affect anyone?” Laziness produces inactivity usually due to lack of motivation or lack of will. Here is the thing – God doesn’t just care about your spiritual needs. God also care that while you are still living on earth that you become successful and a well-rounded person of great example of not just in church but also in the secular world. A well- rounded Christian is one who is exemplary in and out of church. Who lives both a righteously and responsibly before God and humanity. Just as a parent looks out for the well being of their child in making sure they have everything they need – God also cares and protects us the same way.  God's plan for our lives is to be in continuous growth working towards to reach perfection (completion) in Christ. Just as Paul says in: 

Philippians 3:12-14 (AMP)  "Not that I have already obtained it [this goal of being Christlike] or have already been made perfect, but I actively press on [a]so that I may take hold of that [perfection] for which Christ Jesus took hold of me and made me His own. [b]Brothers and sisters, I do not consider that I have made it my own yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the [heavenly] prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus." 

Many would make excuses to justify their laziness by blaming others, fear to fail or just simply lack of motivation. However, that is not what God commanded us. The gospel of Christ requires proactivity from the church. The mandate is a call to action of the body of Christ to preach the word of God and make disciples. We must not allow any obstacles or adversities hold us back from moving forward. Let’s use Joseph for example – God gave him grace and wisdom when offering the Pharaoh advice on how to handle the famine that was headed their way. It is interesting because Joseph acted the same way the ant did in Proverbs 6:4-11. It was because of Joseph’s obedience and diligence which helped save many people, including his family from famine. Let us not waste away the opportunities God allows to be presented for growth.  Most may prefer to stay idle out of fear for failure – yet when we make God our lead – everything we do will bring forth growth because God is involved just like He was with Joseph. Even in the midst of adversity, Joseph prospered because God was with him. The book of Proverbs offers us great advice on living fruitfully and productively. Embrace the advice the bible offers and allow yourself to grow into the person God called you to be.  What would have happened if Joseph was driven by fear and held himself back from moving forward? He had every opportunity to create excuses, but he chose to step forward despite the adversities he faced.

Now let’s talk about laziness in church – many are just comfortable with just warming up the seats. But many do not realize that we are living in times nearing the coming of Christ. There are so many lives at stake who are in need of Christ. There is a lot of work to be done for His kingdom and we need all hands-on deck. We have been called to be diligent and live a life preparing for the day Christ comes. Let’s take the parable of the 10 virgins waiting for their groom as another example (Matthew 25:1-25) – where all had lamps were filled with oil waiting to light the way for their groom. However, the precise moment when the groom arrived only 5 of them were prepared with enough oil and the 5 others were left behind searching for oil to fill up their empty lamps.

 These are the times we must be like the ant preparing for when the winter comes, Like Joseph preparing for famine and like the 5 virgins ready with oil for when the groom arrives. Let us not be left behind or allow others to be left behind because we were wasting away time scrambling for provision. Let us be prepared in EVERYTHING both secular and spiritual.

“Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore, do not be foolish but understand what the Lord’s will is.”

“Los perezosos pronto se empobrecen; los que se esfuerzan en su trabajo se hacen ricos. El joven sabio cosecha en el verano,  pero el que se duerme durante la siega es una vergüenza.” 

Proverbios 10:4-5 (NTV)

¿Sabías que la biblia advierte contra la pereza? Es interesante porque muchos pensarían que tal tema no será lo suficientemente importante como para ser mencionado en la Biblia. Sin embargo, la biblia habla de la pereza en varias ocasiones. De hecho, la Biblia usa la diligencia de una hormiga como ejemplo de ser productivo en la vida.

“Que no te agarren de tonto;  mejor ponte a salvo, como huyen del cazador, las aves y los venados. ¡Vamos, en perezoso, fíjate en la hormiga! ¡Fíjate en cómo trabaja, y aprende a ser sabio como ella! La hormiga no tiene jefes, ni capataces ni gobernantes, pero durante la cosecha recoge su comida y la guarda. Jovencito perezoso, ¿cuánto más seguirás durmiendo?, ¿cuándo vas a despertar? Te duermes un poco, te tomas la siesta, tomas un descansito y te cruzas de brazos ¡Así acabarás en la más terrible pobreza! “

Proverbios 6:4-11 (TLA)

Tal vez te preguntes: "¿Por qué la Biblia insiste en la pereza? ¿Y cómo afectará a alguien?" La pereza produce inactividad, generalmente debido a la falta de motivación o falta de voluntad. Aquí está la situacion: Dios no solo se preocupa por tus necesidades espirituales. A Dios también le importa que mientras vivas en la tierra te conviertas en una persona completa de gran ejemplo, no solo en la iglesia sino también en el mundo secular. Un cristiano completo es aquel que es ejemplar dentro y fuera de la iglesia. Que vive de manera justa y responsable ante Dios y la humanidad. Así como un padre vela por el bienestar de su hijo asegurándose de que tenga todo lo que necesita, Dios también nos cuida y protege de la misma manera.  El plan de Dios para nuestras vidas es estar en continuo crecimiento, trabajando para alcanzar la perfección (la compleción) en Cristo. Tal como dice Pablo en:

Filipenses 3:12-14(RV1960) "No que lo haya alcanzado ya, ni que ya sea perfecto; sino que prosigo, por ver si logro asir aquello para lo cual fui también asido por Cristo Jesús. Hermanos, yo mismo no pretendo haberlo ya alcanzado; pero una cosa hago: olvidando ciertamente lo que queda atrás, y extendiéndome a lo que está delante, prosigo a la meta, al premio del supremo llamamiento de Dios en Cristo Jesús."

Muchos ponen excusas para justificar su pereza culpando a los demás, el miedo a fracasar o simplemente la falta de motivación. Sin embargo, eso no es lo que Dios nos ordenó. El evangelio de Cristo requiere proactividad de la iglesia. El mandato es un llamado a la acción del cuerpo de Cristo para predicar la palabra de Dios y hacer discípulos. No debemos permitir que ningún obstáculo o adversidad nos impida avanzar. Usemos a José, por ejemplo: Dios le dio gracia y sabiduría cuando le ofreció al faraón consejos sobre cómo manejar la hambruna que se avecinaba. Es interesante porque José actuó de la misma manera que la hormiga en Proverbios 6:4-11. Fue gracias a la obediencia y diligencia de José lo que ayudó a salvar de la hambruna a muchas personas, incluyendo su familia. No desperdiciemos las oportunidades que Dios permite que se presenten para el crecimiento.  Muchos pueden preferir permanecer inactivo por miedo al fracaso, sin embargo, cuando hacemos de Dios nuestro guía, todo lo que hacemos traerá crecimiento porque Dios está envuelto al igual que lo estuvo con José. Incluso en medio de la adversidad, José prosperó porque Dios estaba con él. El libro de Proverbios nos ofrece grandes consejos para vivir fructífera y productivamente. Abraza el consejo que ofrece la Biblia y permítete crecer y convertirte en la persona que Dios te llamó a ser.  ¿Qué habría sucedido si José se hubiera dejado llevar por el miedo y se hubiera abstenido de seguir adelante? Tuvo todas las oportunidades para crear excusas, pero optó por dar un paso adelante a pesar de las adversidades que enfrentó.

Ahora hablemos de la pereza en la iglesia: muchos se sienten cómodos con solo calentar los asientos. Muchos no se dan de cuenta de que estamos viviendo en tiempos que se acercan a la venida de Cristo. Hay tantas vidas en peligro que necesitan a Cristo. Hay mucho trabajo por hacer y necesitamos que todos se pongan manos a la obra. Hemos sido llamados a ser diligentes y vivir una vida preparándonos para el día en que Cristo venga. Tomemos la parábola de las 10 vírgenes esperando a su novio como otro ejemplo (Mateo 25:1-25), donde todas tenían lámparas llenas de aceite esperando para iluminar el camino para el novio.  Sin embargo, justamente en el momento en que llegó el novio solo 5 de ellas estaban preparadas con suficiente aceite y las otras 5 quedaron atrás buscando aceite para llenar sus lámparas vacías.

 Estos son los tiempos en los que debemos ser como la hormiga que se prepara para cuando llegue el invierno, como José preparándose para la hambruna y como las 5 vírgenes preparadas con aceite para cuando llegue el novio. No nos quedemos atrás ni permitamos que otros se queden atrás porque estábamos perdiendo el tiempo buscando por provisión. Preparémonos en TODO, tanto en lo secular y el espiritual.

“Así que tengan cuidado de cómo viven. No vivan como necios sino como sabios. Saquen el mayor provecho de cada oportunidad en estos días malos. No actúen sin pensar, más bien procuren entender lo que el Señor quiere que hagan.”

Efesios 5:15-17 (NTV)
